Lawrence Solomon: German newsmagazine, Der Zeit, joins list of climate skeptics

(April 19, 2013) Der Zeit and its top columnist Harald Martenstein, join the list of newly skeptical global warming journalists, with an article today entitled “On the surprises of climate change.”

This article was first published by the National Post.

This news comes from Pierre Gosselin and his excellent NoTricksZone blog, which follows German climate news and translates it into English.

As Gosselin notes, this new found skepticism is especially noteworthy coming from Der Zeit, which Gosselin calls “the  mother of German green weeklies,” and from Martenstein, a prominent lefty. Martenstein begins his column by stating “I’m not a climate skeptic,” then does a splendid job of explaining how forecasts of a warming planet have been farcical and how climate scientists have been changing their minds. “Imagine that biologists declared tomorrow, they were wrong, the lion was not a predator but a ruminant.” Or that physicists would reverse themselves on the boiling point of water, and decide ”water boils at 90 degrees already.”Society would give these scientists an earful. “But the climate scientists are allowed to [get away with it].” (These quotes and paraphrases are based on a Google translation – for more faithful and accurate excerpts, read Gosselin’s summary here.)

Der Zeit and its journalist join top counterparts at The Economist, the London Telegraph, and Reuters who have recently distanced themselves from the view that the science is settled on global warming.
